Who went? – Me, Bob, Frosty and Sat

Riga is said to be a stag town and reading the reviews beforehand, we were led to believe many scams go on here in Latvia . Images of the typical “stag town” involving boozed up Brits were in our heads …. boy were we wrong!

Friday

Once again we flew with Ryanair :). Arrived at airport and 25 Euros later we got to hotel via taxi. Avalon hotel was in the center therfore old town was at the back of us. Being organised I had found out where things were around us and printed off a small map 🙂

We arrived at hotel and checked in whilst a bouncer who looked like Stone cold Steve Austin stared at us. We headed out and straight away found our first bar where it was Euro a pint! Hurrar – however this was on the outskirts.

We ventured into the Old town to see what they had to offer. Straight away we were amazed by the great buildings there. Really is a pretty place. Many small alley ways that remind me of Italy. Now Riga is easy to navigate around. . You have a huge church called St Peters Church in the middle of the square. You can see its spire for miles, so if we ever got lost, just look out for ths spire.

The bar we had found was KIWI BAR. A bar that had a nice wooden terrace outside and featured a nice “wood” smell inside. This look like a newish building and the bar staff seemed friendly so we stayed here.

KIWI BAR

This place is a must! The bar staff here are all girls and are very friendly. They are majority Latvian women who make you feel very welcome. We of course had to get some Buffalo T Shirt shots here.  They had a great laugh with us here. Johnny took a like to one of the girls i named “Data” – as her name sounded like this. He chatted to her and we decided to move on.

Rock Bar

We then found a rock bar joint with guitars and lots of cool props inside. Now this was the only time that we encountered abit of “Hostile” activity towards us. We were the only Brits in there and we noticed they had a room with instruments in it. We asked one of the bar staff who was playing.. he paused, looked at us and said “you wouldnt know them”.. we said go on let us know? he said “have a good evening lads” and walked off. Thought that was quite weird! Other than that a great bar to have pics taken in.

Now at this point we were quite merry and Frosty decided he wanted to go and try and chat to Data some more. We all wanted to go back to the hotel as we had ordered a limo to collect us on the night. I said to the lads “lets go for one more pint, and in that time Frosty must get her facebook or contact details, so he agreed and we went towards Kiwi bar.. now what was about to happen was funny as fook!.. So were approaching Kiwi bar, Frosty is nervous as hell we walking towards to place and just as you aproach it, there is a wooden floor.. Frosty walks ahead in front of us and suddenly gets his foot stuck in the wood and pitched over!!! hahahaha, we were all in stitches!! Right in front of the bar where his supposed to chat to this Data and ask for contact details!! Plus Kiwi has lots of windows at the front so she probably saw haha.

He got up proceeded to walk in and finally did actaully get her Facebook – however this was after one pint, him talking to a really old man about owning a dock? and him drinking as fast as snail! We hurried him along and went back to hotel .

Our hotel room was cool as me and Frosties room had a window that opened up on the room. We got some cool pics from up there.I had me Turtle pyjamas on as these are my relaxing wear before i go out 🙂

We got all dressed up in suits, and the limo arrived. It featured 5 bottles of champagne and a tour around the city. We only had it for an hour so made sure we canned those bottles! Now the limo did try and drop us off at a strip joint with about 10 bouncers outside it. We soon told him to take us to Skyline bar instead. Now at this point we were quite pissed. The limo dropped us off at the Radison which featured the Skyline bar at the top. Now for some reason , that we still cant remember.. we didnt actually locate the Skyline bar, but we did manage to locate a fashion conference that was going on the 2nd floor. We sampled tea and coffe, and told people we were from Samsung and since we were dressed up, i think people believed us.

I lost the boys at some point and tried to call Bob. For some reason i kept getting threw to this lady asking me how id like to connect the call. I thought it was someone with Bobs phone so i kept shouting at them and telling them to put me onto Bobby. Naturally she hadnt got a clue what i was talking about and was very confusing for me lol. I finally found Bob and the others and decided to head out into the town. Outside the hotel was Bumblebee 🙂

We remember walking threw a forest area and making our way to some club place like Moulon Rouge?? It was weird so we walked out. We found a club called “THE CLUB”.

THE CLUB

This place is in the old town and locals had recommended this to us instead of Club Essential as apparantly this place ripped you off. The Club was small and had 3 floors however was a great place to go. When we went there werent that many people in there, so we ventured onto the 2nd floor where we were the only ones up there. This flor over looked the below floor. This guy came up to Bob and asked him if he wanted Shisha. Bob admittidley hadnt got a clue what he said but handed him 10 euros. Guy came back with Shisha and this was the first shisha that had effected me. It was really nice. It wasnt long until people started to come onto the 2nd floor, asking us if it was ok – i think they thought we were VIP. Cut a long story short we ended up arm wrestling some Russians, drinking lots of cheapish beer bottles and then threw shapes on the dancefloor. This is what you see on the clip on youtube with the lazers etc.

It was 2am , and we had heard Kiwi was still open so we headed back. Frosty was quite drunk at this stage and so i told Bob to take him back to the hotel. Me and Sat sessioned in Kiwi having the Local shots that were like blackcurrent vodka, however didnt taste as nice as that sounds! Later on Bob came back. I said “you drop Frosty off, he said nah, his over there by the busker. I looked out the window and there was Frosty with the busker singing tunes with him. He finally joined us and was wasted so at this point so was Bob, so them 2 went back. Me and Sat stayed and chilled with the manager called Baiba who i called “Bible” who was  Awsome  and we drank with her. . however I started to loose Sat as he was falling asleep at the bar. I told him lets go. On the way back we noticed anotehr bar open. It was light at this point as was 5:30am. Sat wanted to go in so we did. As we were drinking, Baiba came from her shift at work and had a drink with us. We then left her and went back to the hotel . We were shattered!

Saturday

Getting in at 7am had its toll on me. I felt sick and hung-over all day! We decided to have something to eat and head out into the old town.

We had a few drinks but I wasn’t feeling  it. Got proper tired.

We visited an Irish pub  and it was hot and sticky in there. We ordered some food and as we did this this big bald American guy came running over to us and grabbed Bobs and Sats shoulders and said “mann you guys were wasted last night”.  He then proceeded to tell us how he was in Kiwi bar when we were teaching the barmaid how to pull a pint of Guinness – apparently Bob went behind the bar and did it himself haha.

He then proceeded to sit with us and discuss how he was depressed as he was supposed to meet a girl over here and she stood him up! He was so depressing, from Buffalo in America and we really weren’t in the mood to see him. Luckily he fucked off to the hotel to get some more money and we soon went!

I left them  boys at about 4pm and went back to hotel to kip. I did get lost on the way back on my own which was freaky!

Come night time we all dolled ourselves up again  and began drinking the bottle of Bacardi that we had got from airport. Sat was pissed! We decided to head out to Kiwi bar. Now Kiwi bar was next door to an Indian restaurant. They used their food. So we decided to try out the curry there, and although I was still feeling shite, this curry was amazing!.

Sat decided to have some milk to try and line his  stomach!

We then wanted to go to Skyline bar.  We walked outside Kiwi and it was 15 min walk and was freezing. Just then 2 guys on bikes with passenger carts on the back came around the corner. We all looked at each other and said lets do it.We stopped the guys and they shouted  “RACE RACE”. So me n Bob got on one, and Frosty n Sat got on the other. They then canned it threw the busy old town, constantly taking over each other. We were all hurling abuse at each other,! Was dead fun. We got to skyline bar in around 4 mins! Fair play to the guys as they were really out of breath.

 Skyline Bar

We went to the Radisson hotel  in which featured the skyline bar at the top of it . 27 floors later in the lift and we were there. Paid 2 lats to get in. It was a very classy place. We walked around and admired the view. We found another room that featured great sofas in it. Had our pic taken!

I was still feeling dodgy  so found it hard to drink. People were all dancing in the middle of the dance floor. At one point a girl went over to Frosty and Bob grabbed their balls. These birds were dolled up but there was something weird about them. We watched them and they were going from guy to guy, getting drinks then fucking off. Bob referred to them as “snipers” ha

It was soon apparent that the 4 dolled up birds in here all new each other. At one stage we saw one of them walk into the back of the bar into the back. We rekon she may have been employed by the bar to chat guys up and get them to buy drinks – therefore Skyline bar makes more money – again not sure but did seem more organised than just the usual “gold digger” approach.

SAT  kept falling asleep on the sofas and the bouncer came over twice to tell him to wake the fuck up and if he does it again his out. So we decided we had to leave.

At this point it was 4 am and I was getting tired.so headed back. Those guys continued to a strip joint where apparently it was cheap to get in but dances were pricey and Frosty used his card in there and had 3 dances, and paid for Bobs. . We teased him saying his card would deffo be scammed now! Haha.

Sunday – The last day!

We checked out and decided to do some touring. It was a wet and windy day!

ST PETERS CHURCH

We went to St Peters Church where you catch a lift up to the top where you get out to take pics of all of Riga. The lift took about 4 hours just to get up 4 storeys. We could hear how bad the wind was. We got out and the guy in the lift went back down. We were now stuck up the top. It was freezing up there, but managed to get some great pics. We waited for the guy to come back up then went down and looked inside the church.

We then went to the shopping mall where Frosty had this great looking coffee……

which turned out to be lumps urghhh.

We took pics of the river then went back to Skyline bar in the day to see the views. I had a great fruit cocktail in there.

Now Johnny had actually fell over quite a lot this weekend and had a  bump on his ankle. He got scared as thought it was a blood clot, so we had to find a local doctor. 25 lats l(£28) later and the doctor confirmed it was a bruise!

We then headed back to Kiwi where we said out good byes.

RIGA LATIVAI Summary– If you read reviews online, then alot of people talk of scams such as women coming over to you, chatting you up then leading you Into a bar only for you to be charged lots of the money for the drinks. Sorry but in my eyes if your going to buy someone a drink then dont pay by a tab… simply pay for the drinks beforehand!. Those reviews slating strip joints because they have been hit with a huge bill at the end, well both Frosty and Bob went to strip joints over there and made sure they confirmed the price of drinks, entrance and dance fees beforehand. There were a few that were expensive so they simply walked out. If you do this beforehand then they cannot BUM you!  Riga is a great place to go . Didn’t bump or witness any stags. Its cheapish and women are so friendly.  They are not slag’s which is nice to see. They simply just seem to want to chat to you like their your mates.  No pushchairs or kids. I think local people take care  of themselves and are very reserved. This is a place I would consider taking my girlfriend as it is also very pretty. Would deffo come back again. Not the SCAMMING / STAG place that people make it out to be online.
