In recent years, the One Piece anime has seen a change in how the animation is produced. The switch from traditional cel animation to digital 2D has been a controversial one, with some fans feeling that the new style is a betrayal of the series’ roots. Nevertheless, the change has allowed the anime to keep up with the ever-increasing pace of the manga, and has resulted in some truly stunning visuals. In this article, we’ll take a look at the changes that have been made to the One Piece anime’s animation, and explore how they’ve affected the show.
One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 1997, with the chapters collected into ninety-six tankōbon volumes as of April 2020. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his gang of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world's ultimate treasure known as "One Piece" in order to become the next Pirate King. The manga has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999. Additionally, Toei has developed thirteen animated feature films, one live action film, and eleven television specials. Several companies have developed various types of merchandising such as a trading card game, and a large number of video games. The manga series was licensed for an English language release by Viz Media, in North America and the United Kingdom. The anime series was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment for an English-language release in North America in 2004, before Funimation acquired the license in 2007. One Piece has received widespread critical acclaim, primarily for its art, humor, characters, and story. Several volumes of the manga have broken publishing records, including the highest initial print run of any book in Japan. The official website for Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga announced that the manga has set a Guinness World Record for "The most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author". As of February 2020, the manga had 400 million copies in print worldwide, making it the best-selling manga series in history. It became the best-selling manga for the eleventh consecutive year in 2018. One Piece is also one of the most profitable manga franchises. In fact, it was the top selling manga in Japan in 2018, selling over 6.6 million copies. The series is also popular among international audiences, with over 50 million copies sold in 43 countries worldwide as of February 2020.
In recent years, the One Piece anime has been criticized for its declining animation quality. This has led to calls for the series to change animation studios. While some fans believe that a change in animation studios would improve the quality of the anime, others believe that it would tarnish the series' legacy. Ultimately, it is up to the fans to decide whether or not they want to see the One Piece anime continue with a new animation studio.
